The National Employment Matrix from the Bureau of Labor Statistics will show you a ranked list of industries for a given occupation.

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development has a database that shows how wages for the same occupation differ among industries. The method of doing the search is a little complicated but I think the information is worth the effort.

First go to the NJ Department of Labor section on "Labor Market Information" at http://lwd.dol.state.nj.us/labor/lpa/LMI_index.html Then click on "Data Tools" and then select "Occupational Employment Statistics"
For Monmouth County area data select "Metropolitan Division" and then "Edison". Click on "continue".
then Select one occupation and click on "continue"
then "select all" the industries and click on "continue"
then select "hourly wage" and click on "continue"
Then on the "data series' page,click on "select all" and then "continue"
Then on the "sorting columns" page, just click on "continue"
The report should now appear. You click on the column headings you can change the sorting to up or down. You can also download the report to excel.

The full title of the report is "SHRM Research Spotlight: Social Networking Websites and Staffing". Click on the title to read the 2 page report. The Monmouth County Library Career Information Center will present a information session on careers in the Natural Gas Industry at the Eastern Branch Library on Route 35 in Shrewsbury at 4pm on Monday, December 14th, 2009.

A representative from the New Jersey Natural Gas company will describe careers and occupations in the natural gas industry. This is not a job-fair. Job openings occur in industries through business expansion and from replacement of retiring workers. Jobs in utility industries are relatively recession resistant because people need heat, water and electricity just as they need food.

US Census publishes a set of statistics called "Local Employment Dynamics" which describe job creation, employment rates, "separations", new hires, wages of newly hired employees and differences in the above criteria between men and women at the county and state level. With data on all major industry sectors (down to the 4 digit SIC code level) this data can help you in your job search by showing the occupational turnover that occurs in all industries (some more than others).

At 10am on Friday June 26, there will be a Career Information Center Program on "Employer Locator" which is a job-hunting aid produced by the US Department of Labor. Employer Locator is a link off of CareerInfoNet at www.acinet.org

Employer Locator does not list jobs. It lists potential employers. The job-searcher puts in search criteria such as location, occupation or industry and Employer Locator takes data from the Occupation-Industry Matrix and the business directory InfoUSA to come up with a list of potential employers.

Information Technology Job Trends

The Spring 2009 issue of Occupational Outlook Quarterly has an 8 page article on job trends in Information Technology. Go to it directly by clicking here The article identifies major job groups in the IT field and relies on data from the Current Population Survey. Overall IT occupations grew by about 8% from 2001 to 2007. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts overall growth from 2006 to 2016 at 24%, but those predictions were made before the current recession.

The NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development has a wonderful website at http://lwd.dol.state.nj.us/labor/index.shtml. This site includes information links for employment, social services, job-hunting...you name it. I use the employment projections a lot. I find the most useful chart is "Estimated and Projected Employment of Detailed Occupation 2006-2016" Notice in the "average annual job openings" how many of the openings are caused by replacements. In other words, the employment does not have to growing for jobs openings to exist.

JOLTS data on Hiring

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has an ongoing statistical program called JOLTS which stands for "Job Openings and Labor Turnover". The data lags only about 3 months behind real time. The opening line of the December 2008 JOLTS report says "there were 2.7 million job openings in the U.S. on the last day of December 2008". For the full report click here

The report also says that preliminary data for December estimate that 3.9 million people were hired in December. The downside is that 4.9 million people separated for employment, but the "separation" figure includes 2.0 milllion who quit or retired. So, roughly speaking in december, 3.9 million were hired and 2.9 million were laid-off.

This looks like a good book for students about to enter the job market; sections include choosing a career, cover letters, resumes, interviewing, dress and appearance. There is not much hear about how to find a specific job, but one book can't do everything.

I had not looked at the "Career Voyages" Website for a while; it is definitely worth a look. Presented by the US Dept of Labor and US Department of Education it tries to connect labor trends and educational programs. Of course, being based on the 2006-2016 occupational projections it does not reflect the immediate recession, but for long-term planning it is probably ok. It certainly is interesting.

In a previous post I mentioned the 2004 article in Occupational Outlook Quarterly that is titled "Matching Yourself with the world of work 2004". Take a look at it. The charts have a column with the heading "economically sensitve" which means the the OOQ staff thinks that the job title would not be affected by recession. A blank in the column means that job is sort of recession resistant. It is a interesting list. Health, social service and education jobs are noted a resistant. take a look at the list. Using Census Department Statistics To Help in Job-searching

The US Census Department (online at www.census.gov) publishes Local Employment Dynamics statistics that might help in your job search. One set of data is called QWI Online and it’s full name is Quarterly Workforce Indicators. The other set of data is called Industry Focus. Used together the data can answer such questions as:

What is the employment in a specific industry in your county
How many new jobs are being created in that industry.

Here is an example.

Say I want to find the industries in Monmouth County that have the greatest number of new employees over the previous year (the most recent data is 1 year old). You go to Industry Focus select “new hires” as the primary search criteria and Monmouth County, NJ as the geographical entity. (you can add other secondary search criteria). The resulting list shows the “722 Food Services and Drinking Places” as having the most “new hires”. You can then use the QWI Online to find out more detail about the kinds of Food Services and Drinking places (taking it down to 4 digit NAICS detail) for the subgroups of Full-Service Restaurants, Limited-Service, Special Foods, and Drinking Places. The data in this example are as follows;
722 Food Services and Drinking Places 5,775 new hires from 2006 to 2007
7221 Full-Service Restaurants had 2,891 new hires
7222 Limited-Service Restaurants had 2,189 new hires
7223 Special Food Services had 442 new hires
7224 Drinking Places had 253 new hires

The only industry group that predicts growth is the healthcare sector. Good article in today's New York Times (dec 9) about a problem with infrastructure jobs only going to skilled labor. New York Times is online full-text at www.nytimes.com Lots of bloggers are writing in about the utility of education and training programs for low-skilled workers; even basic literacy programs. What are the infrastructure needs of Monmouth County? Could some of these projects (Green industry) involve lots of training for presently low-skilled workers. The present planning to minimize the effect for the closing of Fort Monmouth seems aimed at retaining high-skilled jobs, but unemployment is higher in the low-skilled workforce. Could Fort Monmouth be turned into a training center for green industry work in central nj?

Education is one of the few industries that is not downsizing...yet. This books outlines the steps to getting a job as a college teacher; a fast-growing occupation. How does tenure sound to you?
